Copper Piping Failure

Corrosion Failure of Copper Piping

Pitting Corrosion and Leakage observed in Cold Water Copper Piping in Residential Home

Macroscopic Examination of Pits and Metallographic Cross Section Analysis

Scanning Electron Microscope Examination / Energy Dispersive X-ray Chemical Analysis

Failure was related to prolonged period of stagnation after completion of the plumbing installation and occupancy of the home. Stagnant conditions allowed settling of sediment deposits setting up local differential aeration cells.

Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy established that flux residue was not a cause for pitting. Failure not related to workmanship.
