About Us

KARS’ ADVANCED MATERIALS, INC. is a minority owned small business that was started in Southern California in 1989 to offer industry complete analytical services related to characterization of advanced materials. Kars’ consists of a group of professional engineers with advanced degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Bombay) UC Berkeley, USC, UCLA and UC Irvine. The personnel at Kars’ have over three decades of experience in characterizing engineering materials including metals, rubbers, fibers (glass and carbon), ceramics, polymers, metal matrix composites and polymer matrix composites. Kars’ has a complete in-house materials characterization laboratory with state of the art equipment.

Ramesh J. Kar, Ph.D., P.E. – President

American College of Forensic Examiners Fellow, ASM International Fellow

Ramesh J. Kar has a Doctorate in Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of California. He has been actively involved in the industry since 1978. His consulting experience spans areas of failure analysis, materials selection, product liability and development. Dr. Kar has been principal investigator in over 3000 failure investigations including turbine/heat exchanger failures, glass failures, metal, wood and plastic chair failures, composite poles, ski-boots, chains, seatbelts, ladder failures; ladder cases, automotive & airplane component failures, ABS piping/construction defect cases. He has provided expert witness consultations / courtroom testimony in over 500 civil and criminal investigations (plaintiff and defense) in the states of California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

Naresh J. Kar, Ph.D., P.E. – Vice-President

American College of Forensic Examiners Fellow, ASM International Fellow

Naresh J. Kar has a Doctorate in Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of California. He has been actively involved in the industry since 1978. His consulting experience spans areas of corrosion/wear/mechanical failures, patent infringement, surface techniques and product development. Dr. Kar’s legal experience are in the areas of automotive component failures, plumbing/piping failures, medical device failures, chairs, industrial hardware failures, construction defects, bicycle accidents, paint analysis, gas and propane explosions, and food contamination issues. Nikhil Kar Ph.D. P.E.2
Principal Mechanical Engineer, M36943
Principal Metallurgical / Materials Engineer, MT 1982

Affiliations: ASM, ASME, ASTM, University of Southern California Lecturer, Materia Inc. Engineering Consultant

Nikhil’s expertise is focused on mechanical behavior, fatigue/fracture of engineering materials. Nikhil has training in mechanical testing, materials characterization and microscopy. While at Materia Inc., he focused on development of high glass transition temperature Proxima formulations, and long term durability/aging studies of Proxima resins and composite specimens. His background in material science and mechanical engineering allow him to provide expertise in a range of material related failures and mechanical engineering issues.

Major Equipment

Some of the major analytical equipment at Kars’ includes a JEOL 820 and JEOL 6610 LV digital scanning electron microscopes, capable of high resolution imaging as well as a Hirox digital microscope. Kars’ is equipped to perform X-ray microanalysis with two nitrogen free IXRF ultra-thin window systems. Characterization of plastic materials and organic contaminants is performed using a Nicolet Nexus 670 FTIR system with an IR microscope. We are also set up to perform image analysis, feature analysis and digital imaging. Kars’ has a complete failure analysis laboratory that includes the very latest Reichert metallographic equipment, hardness and microhardness testers, Polaroid, Olympus and Nikon digital macro- and micro-photography equipment, and other peripherals required for characterizing engineering materials. Our laboratory is set-up for joint inspections on legal and insurance claims. We offer a wide-screen digital plasma display for real time video and digital documentation of all tests. More recently, we now have the ability to perform quasi static and low frequency fatigue mechanical tests of metals, polymers and composites using our United Test frame as well as finite element analysis for stress and temperature characterization distributions for material designs.
